Britain in Bloom Award

We are proud to announce that we have been awarded a Britain in Bloom Award for the amazing work that our staff and volunteers have been doing in Hele village, transforming a space that was unloved into an amazing community garden and growing space.

Well done everyone and here is to greater success next year.

1 Year Party at the Windmill Centre

Last week we had a party to celebrate 1 year of running our day services and community cafe @ The Windmill Centre.

This was a fantastic evening with over 70 people there enjoying great food, entertainment and friendships.

A huge thank you to all the staff and volunteers who have made this first year such a success.

Roll on 2023!

Celebrating 1 Year @ The Windmill Centre

Turning Heads is celebrating its 1-year anniversary of running a day service @ The Windmill Centre in Hele, Torquay. This has been a very busy first year and here just a few of our achievements so far:

  • We have served over 3,800 meals from our community café.
  • We welcomed 1,920 people to our Friday social group and of these 95 have been unique users.
  • Over 50 people have attended regular weekly sessions in cooking, art, gardening, and wellbeing.
  • We have run 144 cooking sessions and 48 Friday social group sessions.
  • We have had HAF projects running over both Easter and Christmas holidays and offered free food to any child during school holidays.
  • In addition to our daily opportunities, we have had two Jubilee parties entertaining 220 people and engaged in the community providing opportunities for anyone to get involved in through social prescribing and volunteer routes with the DWP.
  • We have partnered with the DWP in providing bespoke work experience and work placements and provided school-based opportunities for Mayfield Sixth Form and Oakwood Court College.
  • Through our community engagement projects we have secured funding to develop our ‘incredible edible’ allotment project in the grounds of the community centre and will continue to grow vegetables and provide them free to anyone living in the Hele area.

This next year will see even more exciting things happening @ The Windmill Centre and our new development @ Victoria Park Methodist Church in Plainmoor.

Thank you to all the staff and volunteers for making this possible.

There are always opportunities for you to get involved, attend sessions, and learn new skills. We have highly skilled staff, and you are always guaranteed a warm welcome.

Drop in and see us and see what we can offer.

Work Experience Opportunities

Turning Heads in conjunction with DWP are able to offer anyone with a disability or who has been out of work access to a fully-funded work experience programme. During this period we will aim to help you to:

  1. Understand basic health & safety and food hygiene.
  2. Work as a team and develop these skills.
  3. Feel more confident as an employee.
  4. Feel confident in the kitchen, being able to follow recipes and serve the public.
  5. Become more employable when you finish the programme.

Jubilee Parties

Over the bank holiday weekend, we celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee by running 2 parties for over 200 people. The first on Monday was for children and the second on the Wednesday was for any adult with additional needs. On Monday we made a Jubilee lunch, welcomed Lucie aka ‘Made for the Stage’ entertainer, met the new Queen of Torbay and then all ate ice creams from Mrs Frosty. Wednesday was more of a 1950’s theme with rock and roll, photo shoots and bubbly – toasting the Queen and singing songs.

Here are some of the photo highlights from the parties.

Turning Heads has been awarded money from the Arts Council’s Let’s Create Jubilee Fund by Devon Community Foundation

The Arts Council’s Let’s Create Jubilee Fund by will ensure that creativity plays an important role in local community celebrations for Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

We will be using some of this award to run 2 fantastic celebrations. On Monday 30th May we will be running a celebration for children aged 0 – 11 and then on Wednesday 1st June we will be having a 50’s party for the grown-ups!

Easter HAF 2022

This Easter we ran a forest school on Windmill Hill as part of the school’s holiday programme. We worked in conjunction with The Youth Trust and provided a 4-day programme for children in Torbay in receipt of free school meals and who were young carers.

The programme was varied and included fire building, den making, camp cooking, tree climbing, tight rope walking, slingshot competitions and much more. One of the many comments from the children that summed up this experience was:

‘I love it here – I am allowed to do stuff I couldn’t do at home – my mum would never let me near a fire!’

Here are some of the photo highlights.
